Help for Take the Stairs on iPhone

What Take the Stairs does

Take the Stairs counts the flights of stairs you climb with your iPhone's motion sensors and Apple Health, counts your elevator rides next to them, and can remind you to take the stairs when you arrive at places you choose. Everything stays on your iPhone: no account, no ads, no tracking.

Getting started

Open the app and follow the setup pages. Each one explains why it asks, and you can continue without it:

  • Apple Health (read only): flights climbed and steps, including Apple Watch.
  • Motion & Fitness: counts today's flights, steps and elevator rides on your iPhone.
  • Location (While Using, then Always): saved places, arrival reminders, and linking an elevator ride to an approximate place.
  • Notifications: stair reminders and a short note after an elevator ride.

My flights look low or missing

Check iOS Settings › Privacy & Security › Motion & Fitness, and that Take the Stairs is on. If you use Apple Health, open the Health app › Sharing › Apps › Take the Stairs and allow Flights Climbed and Steps. Then pull down on Today to refresh. Take the Stairs shows the larger of the two counts for each day, never the sum.

Elevator rides

Rides are counted on your iPhone while the app is open, and from your iPhone's recorded motion history the next time iOS runs the app. With Location set to Always, a ride is linked to an approximate place, saved under Places. You can rename it, turn off its notifications, or delete it; a deleted spot is not saved again.

Reminders

Places › choose a place › Notifications. You can set a schedule, quiet hours and a daily limit in Settings. The free plan reminds at one place at a time; Take the Stairs Pro reminds at every place you save.

Take the Stairs Pro

Pro is optional: US$4.99 a month, or US$29.99 a year with a 7-day free trial for eligible new subscribers (prices may vary by country). Pro adds month and year insights, calorie history, any daily goal, weekly challenges, reminders at every place, more share styles and recap cards.

  • Restore: Settings › Take the Stairs Pro › Restore Purchases.
  • Manage or cancel: iOS Settings › your name › Subscriptions, or Settings › Take the Stairs Pro › Manage subscription in the app. Cancel at least 24 hours before the period ends to avoid renewal.
  • If a subscription ends, nothing you tracked is deleted; one place keeps its reminder.
  • Refunds are handled by Apple: https://reportaproblem.apple.com

Your data

  • Settings › Export my data creates CSV files and opens the share sheet.
  • Settings › Delete location history removes visits and ride locations.
  • Settings › Delete all app data removes everything the app stored. Apple Health data is not touched.
  • Deleting the app deletes all of its data.
